Convention People’s Party lays out policy recommendations to curb Galamsey

By Jibril Abdul Mumuni

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has proposed alternative policy recommendations to redirect young people from illegal mining (galamsey) and provide them with sustainable livelihoods.

In a letter addressed to the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Eric Opoku, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, the party stated that as the government plans to pursue its flagship projects in the coming years, it is imperative that these projects are tailored to benefit the youth involved in galamsey and assist their transition to other livelihoods.

The letter under the hand of Mr Enock Donald Sakpa, acting Secretary General of CPP, noted that the galamsey industry, despite its illegality, had become the source of income for many young Ghanaians.

“Therefore, by providing alternative opportunities, the government can help these young people transition to more sustainable and safer livelihoods, thereby reducing the environmental degradation and health risks associated with galamsey,” the letter said.

The party urged the Ministry of Agriculture to design projects that provided training, resources, and support to youth transitioning from galamsey.

It suggested that this could include initiatives in crop cultivation, agro-processing, and marketing, which could empower the youth to become productive members of society.

The CPP also proposed vocational training programmes in areas such as construction, manufacturing, and renewable energy to provide the youth with alternative skills to galamsey.

The party stated that vocational training could help to reduce the country’s reliance on illegal mining and promote sustainable economic growth.

The CPP advised establishing mentorship programmes that paired young people with experienced professionals in their chosen fields to provide guidance and support as they transition.

According to the party, offering economic incentives, such as subsidies, grants, or low-interest loans, could encourage the youth to participate in these alternative livelihoods.

The party said by tailoring its flagship projects to benefit youth involved in galamsey, the government could reduce environmental degradation, promote economic growth, and youth empowerment.
