AFN names 26 athletes for CAA Championships in Ghana

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has announced a 26-man squad to represent the country at the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Region II Senior Championships scheduled for Monday, 18th and Tuesday, 19th August 2025, at the University of Ghana Sports Complex in Accra.

The contingent will compete across 20 track and field events, with seasoned campaigner Patience Okon-George leading the women’s 400m team under the technical guidance of AFN Technical Director Gabriel Okon and National Head Coach Solomon Aliyu. The team departs Lagos for Accra on Saturday.

Sprinters and Relays

Nigeria will parade a strong sprint lineup in the 100m, 200m and relays. On the men’s side, Olaolu Olatunde, James Taiwo Emmanuel, Abdulgafar Audu, and Chidera Nzeakor will feature, while the women’s events will see Chioma Nweke, Olayinka Olajide, Iyanuoluwa Bada, and Maria Thompson in action.

For the 110m hurdles, US-based Nnamdi Onwaeze and Musa Wisdom Great will fly Nigeria’s flag.

Middle Distance and 400m Events

The men’s 400m and 4x400m relay team includes Gafari Badmus, Ezekiel Asuquo, Victor Sampson, and David Alkalu. In the women’s category, alongside Okon-George, Favour Onyah, Opeyemi Oke, and Anita Enaruna are listed.

Comfort Anietie James will be Nigeria’s sole representative in the women’s 800m.

Field Events

Nigeria’s field team features Prestina Ochonogor, a Paris 2024 Olympic finalist, in the women’s long jump, with Charles Godfred representing the men. Other entries include Blessing Oluwayemi (triple jump), Adams Kure (javelin), and Dickson Ugochukwu (shot put).

In the women’s field, Treasure Omosiuwe (high jump) and Victoria Kparika (javelin) complete the lineup.

AFN President’s Charge

AFN President and CAA Region II boss, Tonobok Okowa, charged the athletes to replicate Nigeria’s dominance from last year, when Team Nigeria topped the medals table with 13 gold, four silver, and one bronze.

“We expect nothing short of excellence from our athletes. They carry the hopes of the nation and the spirit that made us champions last year,” Okowa said.
