The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Johnson Pandit Asiama, has urged banks to increase lending to customers following the easing of inflationary pressures and the corresponding reduction in the monetary policy rate.

According to him, the banking sector remains a cornerstone of Ghana’s economic stability.

Speaking during an engagement with the CEOs of banks on August 13, 2025, he said, “Our monetary policy stance has begun to shift toward supporting growth, and it is critical that banks align by stimulating credit to the private sector, particularly to productive areas of the economy.”

Asiama noted that the latest supervisory data confirms the sector is well-capitalised, liquid, and profitable.

“We have seen a steady decline in non-performing loan (NPL) ratios, reflecting both the improving macroeconomic environment and the enhanced credit underwriting standards you have implemented in recent years,” he stated.

The governor explained that the recapitalisation journey, driven by both retained earnings and new capital injections—has strengthened balance sheet resilience.

“This positions the sector to absorb shocks and seize new growth opportunities. But with this resilience comes responsibility,” he stressed.

To ensure that credit expansion does not compromise the quality of banks’ loan books, he called for prudent risk management.

“The challenge is to grow lending while preserving the hard-earned stability that now defines our financial system,” he said.

Asiama further revealed that the BoG will soon implement a consolidated set of measures designed to strengthen resilience, enhance transparency, and align the banking system with the highest international standards.

“This agenda addresses both the forward-looking reforms that will future-proof the sector and the immediate corrective actions needed to close existing compliance gaps,” he added.
