Ghana MP Demands Mining Emergency After Crash Deaths

Gushegu MP Hassan Tampuli has urged President John Mahama to declare a state of emergency on illegal mining, calling it the only fitting legacy for eight anti-galamsey advocates killed in a helicopter crash.

The victims died en route to launch a responsible mining initiative in Obuasi last week, their mission abruptly cut short by tragedy.

Tampuli insists mere amendments to Legislative Instrument 246(2) which permits mining in forest reserves are insufficient.

He demands its full revocation alongside an immediate parliamentary inquiry into the August 6 crash.

“We’ve debated galamsey for years,” he told Joy News. “Action, not words, is what Ghana needs now.” His appeal reflects mounting public pressure to honor the victims by ending the illegal mining crisis.

The Chief of Staff’s confirmation of the deaths has intensified scrutiny of Ghana’s mining policies. Many citizens argue these campaigners perished fighting for the nation’s future. Will their sacrifice finally force lasting change?
