Education Minister assures swift repairs after fire at Oyoko Methodist SHS

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has pledged to ensure the speedy restoration and repair of the housemaster’s bungalow that was gutted by fire on Monday, August 4, at Oyoko Methodist Senior High School in the New Juaben North Municipality of the Eastern Region.

The fire, which began in the apartment of the housemaster adjoining the boys’ dormitory block, did not significantly affect the dormitories and caused no harm to students or other occupants of the bungalow.
As part of efforts to maintain calm on campus, the school’s Guidance and Counselling Unit engaged all students on Tuesday morning before academic activities commenced.
While in Koforidua for a meeting, the Education Minister, accompanied by the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, the Chief Director, his Special Advisor, and the Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Awatey, visited the school to inspect the extent of damage and assure students and staff of the government’s support.

Briefing the media after an engagement with the school’s management on Tuesday, August 5, the Eastern Regional Director of Education, Ivy Asantewaa Owusu, said the Minister has promised to restore all items lost in the fire to enable the affected housemaster, who is currently taking temporary shelter with the school’s Reverend Minister, to return and resume his duties.
“The authorities have assured the school that in no time, they will fix the place for the housemaster and also make sure that everything he has lost will be provided so he can continue with his work,” she stated.

She further called for calm and assured parents of their wards’ safety as management continues to liaise with the Ghana National Fire Service, which has begun investigations into the cause of the fire.
