John Dramani Mahama and Afia Pokua
Ghanaian media personality Afia Pokua, popularly known as Vim Lady, has called out President John Dramani Mahama and other politicians for politicising the ongoing conflict in Bawku.
According to Vim Lady, the Bawku conflict should never have been reduced to a political fight but instead addressed through collaborative, non-partisan efforts to restore peace.
She referenced a previous comment made by John Mahama, in which he claimed that the conflict in Bawku always intensifies under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government but calms down when the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is in power.
Vim Lady, however, criticised Mahama, stating that his own words have come back to haunt him, as violence in the area has worsened seven months into his current administration.
She noted that unknown assailants are now even targeting students in schools.
Speaking on her “Egyaso Gyaso” show on Okay FM in a segment shared on social media, she stated, “Now, anybody who has evil intentions can take advantage of the Bawku conflict and escalate things.
“And President Mahama, you are part of the whole thing, so take action, because it’s not everything we must politicise. That’s why people are questioning President Mahama.
“Because they’ve used the conflict for politics, claiming that if the NDC comes to power, they’ll solve it. But the NDC is in power now, and still, seven months on, we haven’t been able to resolve it.
“This should have been a joint fight between the NDC and NPP, without politics. But now people are dying like fowls.
“What you said is now haunting you. And people are still dying, including students.”
Fresh violence has erupted in Bawku after a student of Bawku Senior High School was allegedly dragged from his dormitory and shot dead by unknown assailants.
In a separate incident, the residence of the Member of Parliament for Bawku and Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, was reportedly set ablaze.
The recent unrest is believed to have been triggered by the killing of a Kusasi chief in Kumasi, which has sparked a series of reprisal attacks.
Two more individuals were reportedly killed in Kumasi in connection with the chieftaincy tensions, further escalating hostilities in Bawku.
Eyewitnesses say the SHS student, identified as a Mossi, was murdered on the night of Saturday, July 26, 2025, after his attackers scaled the school’s perimeter wall. He is suspected of having been mistaken for an affiliate of one of the rival factions in the protracted chieftaincy dispute.
Later that same night, unidentified assailants vandalised and set fire to Mahama Ayariga’s residence.
