‘Ghana’s Security Should Focus on Intelligence, Not Armed Forces’ – Ejisu MP Boateng

Kwabena Boateng, Member of Parliament for Ejisu, has voiced strong concerns over the growing prominence of armed personnel in Ghana’s national security operations as reported by Ghana Web.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, August 2, 2025, Boateng criticized the militarized approach, which he believes strays from the original purpose of the country’s national security framework.

“The worrying, emerging issues about national security—when you read the national security law, you do not see a group of weaponized people,” Boateng stated.

He emphasized that in today’s world, national security should prioritize human security, intelligence gathering, and research, rather than the reliance on armed forces.

His remarks come amid controversy surrounding an incident involving National Security operatives and military officers during a demolition exercise, which resulted in the assault of JoyNews journalist Carlos Calony and his interviewee.

Boateng condemned the attack, labeling it as a direct threat to both democratic governance and press freedom.

The Ejisu MP also raised alarms about the qualifications of some security operatives, suggesting that certain individuals may not possess the necessary academic credentials for their roles.

He recounted an unsettling encounter at a police station, where he witnessed a National Security officer struggling to write his name.

“You could see that he had no form of education,” Boateng added, expressing concern over the growing need for well-trained personnel in sensitive security positions.
