I don’t allow sleepovers anymore because a girl nearly died in my house

Dear GhanaWeb,

Three years ago, I met this lady somewhere around town. She was a very lovely person. I’ll say of all the ladies I’ve met, she was the only person who was so different and had good communication skills.

I was so attracted to her choice of words and her composure. I invited her over for a sleepover.

She was in Accra, and I was in Kumasi. I was in my final year in the university, so she visited on campus.

She came on Friday, and we spent that night peacefully. We ate, had sex, and spoke to a length. We cooked on Saturday and took a walk later that evening.

Around 1am, that dawn, she developed high fever, we both thought it was malaria. It was so bad that I’d have to go and get her some malaria drugs at that odd hour. I searched till I got some.

She took the drug and slept, but nothing was working. Around 3a.m, she started crying that she was dying. I tried to calm her, but she kept saying she was dying. She looked so weak and helpless.

At this point, fear gripped me. I reached out to a mate who came to help me take her to the hospital. I backed her till we got there. There was no car.

She couldn’t talk, the doctors kept taking every penny I had till I was empty. They kept doing different labs.

I had to call friends and borrow money. Around 11 am that Sunday, the doctor came to tell me that her kidney had failed.

At that point, I realised my problem was bigger than me. I had to take her phone to call whoever I could, to inform them.

I couldn’t succeed. Hours later, she managed to open her eyes briefly. She took her phone and called her mom. They came to Kumasi to see her.

Lucky enough, they weren’t mad at me. They got an ambulance and took her back to Accra.

I had the biggest relief of my life when that ambulance took off from the hospital.

Despite losing every penny I had, I still thank God she didn’t die in my hands and her parents were very understanding because the girl was only 23 years old.

She passed on just about a month after. They couldn’t save her. She was a good lady, I still feel bad that she left this earth that young.

From that day till now, I vowed to never let anyone sleep at my place. The pressure I went through within those 24 hours? Only God knows!

Some women broke up with me because I did not allow them to sleepover.

This incident haunts me everyday and my partners always feel I’m not over the girl who died.

How do I overcome this? What should I do to convince myself that what happened was an accident?
