New Juaben South Member of Parliament (MP), Michael Okyere Baafi, has publicly challenged the Ghana Police Service to present the individuals they claim to have arrested in connection with the violent incidents that marred the Ablekuma North parliamentary election rerun.
The election, which took place under tense conditions, witnessed chaotic scenes involving masked men reportedly linked to political groups. These individuals attacked voters, media personnel, and politicians at several polling stations. Notably, at St. Peter’s polling station, NPP parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie and former MP Mavis Hawa Koomson were physically assaulted by unidentified men who stormed the venue on motorbikes and in a pickup truck.
Journalists were not spared in the melee. Salomey Martey of JoyNews was slapped and pushed, while GHOne TV’s Kwabena Agyekum Banahene was allegedly assaulted by a uniformed police officer inside a polling station. ATV’s Vida Wiafe was also reportedly pepper-sprayed while covering the event.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 23, and signed by Supt. Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Regional Police Command, two suspects were identified as Musah Muntari, a 46-year-old STC Station Manager, and Ali Saeed, also known as Mboma, a 43-year-old businessman.
However, speaking during a live interview on GHOne TV, MP Michael Okyere Baafi cast doubt on the authenticity of the police announcement and demanded that the arrested individuals be shown publicly.
“I dare the Ghana Police to show us those they claim to have arrested during the Ablekuma North rerun violence,” he said, adding that the lack of urgency in ensuring accountability only undermines public trust in the electoral process and law enforcement.
