The Acting Chief Justice of Ghana, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has cautioned aspiring law students that entry into the country’s law schools will not be granted indiscriminately, according to a report by Graphic Online.

He emphasised that the General Legal Council (GLC) remains committed to maintaining high standards in legal education and will not open the doors of the profession to just anyone.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie stated that those who gain admission should view it as a privilege and take pride in the opportunity. While expanding access to legal education is important, he stressed that it must be balanced against the imperative to uphold quality and integrity in the profession.

He warned that unregulated and unlimited admissions could erode academic standards and ultimately weaken the legal profession in the long term.

To safeguard the future of legal education in Ghana, the Acting Chief Justice noted that the GLC is collaborating with key institutions such as the Office of the Attorney General to uphold rigorous standards in legal training.

“I want to repeat this; we are not going to open the gates just to let anybody at all in. You must be proud when you get a chance to enter the Law School. You should be able to tell yourself that you got here through hard work and merit,” Justice Baffoe-Bonnie said.

He made these remarks on Monday during the inauguration of a moot court at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) Law School.
