Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has lavished generous rewards on the Super Falcons following their sensational comeback victory over hosts Morocco to win the 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Each of the 24 players has been awarded the Naira equivalent of $100,000, while members of the 11-man technical team will receive $50,000 apiece.

According to reports, in addition to the cash, the President also gifted each player a fully furnished three-bedroom apartment in recognition of their heroic efforts on the continental stage.

“There is a cash award of the Naira equivalent of $100,000 each to the 24 players and equivalent of $50,000 to the 11-man technical team,” he said.

The announcement comes just two days after the Super Falcons staged one of the greatest comebacks in WAFCON history, overturning a two-goal deficit to defeat Morocco 3-2 in front of a capacity crowd at Rabat’s Stade Olympique.

The dramatic victory, sealed by substitute Jennifer Echegini’s 88th-minute strike, marked Nigeria’s record-extending 10th WAFCON title, reaffirming their dominance as Africa’s most successful women’s national team.

In a pulsating final on Saturday, July 26, 2025, Morocco stormed to a 2-0 lead within the first 30 minutes.

Captain Ghizlane Chebbak broke the deadlock in the 12th minute with a powerful strike from the edge of the area, and Sanaa Mssoudy added a second twelve minutes later after a controversial collision went unpunished by the referee.

But Nigeria refused to fold. Esther Okoronkwo led the charge, converting a penalty in the 64th minute after a VAR review ruled a Moroccan handball.

Moments later, she turned provider, breaking through the Moroccan defence before setting up Folashade Ijamilusi for the equalizer.

In the 88th minute, Jennifer Echegini latched onto a loose ball in the box and slotted home to complete the remarkable turnaround, silencing the home crowd and sparking wild Nigerian celebrations.

This latest WAFCON triumph adds to Nigeria’s decorated legacy in women’s football, having now won 10 of the tournament’s 13 editions.
