Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has announced that the Economic and Organised Office (EOCO) has completed investigations into Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, and the Chief Executive Officer of the National Buffer Stock Company, Abdul Hanan Wahab. The findings, he said, will be made public soon.
Speaking during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, July 28, Dr. Ayine revealed that his office is now in possession of the final reports on both high-profile cases and will announce the next steps in the coming days.
“The Economic and Organised Office has completed investigations in respect of Chairman Wontumi and the National Buffer Stock CEO, Abdul Hanan Wahab, and his accomplices. The results of both investigations will be announced very soon,” he said.
Dr. Ayine also confirmed that the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has finalised a separate docket on the Akonta Mining case and submitted it to his office.
He disclosed that charges have been prepared and returned to the CID for the suspects to be formally charged and arraigned before the court.
“The Police CID has also completed a docket on the Akonta Mining case and submitted the same to my office. We have prepared charges and sent them back to the CID for the suspects to be formally charged and arraigned,” he added.
Chairman Wontumi, who also serves as the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), was previously confirmed to be under investigation for serious offences including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering. The disclosure was made by Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem-Sai on May 29.
In a related case, Buffer Stock CEO Abdul Hanan Wahab and his wife were arrested on June 25 over allegations of financial irregularities. Wahab was subsequently granted bail to the tune of GH¢60 million with two sureties.
Dr. Ayine reaffirmed the Attorney-General’s Office’s commitment to ensuring accountability, stating that prosecutions will proceed in all cases of corruption and financial malfeasance, regardless of the individuals involved.
