Weeks after public backlash over comments made by artiste manager Bullgod on United Showbiz, the show’s host, Empress Gifty, has finally addressed the matter with a formal apology.
Opening the Saturday, July 26 edition of the program, Empress Gifty issued an unreserved apology on behalf of Despite Media and the entire United Showbiz team for the offensive remarks directed at Jesus Christ during a previous broadcast. Bullgod, during his appearance on the show earlier this month, had described Jesus as “a fool,” citing Proverbs 29:11 in an attempt to justify his claim. The comment quickly went viral, sparking outrage among Christians and the broader public.
In her statement, Empress Gifty acknowledged the pain and disappointment the remark caused, particularly within Ghana’s Christian community.
“We take full responsibility for what happened. As the host of this show and on behalf of Despite Media, I sincerely apologise to all viewers and the Christian community for the discomfort and offence caused,” she said.
She went on to emphasise that United Showbiz values the beliefs of all faiths and does not condone any form of disrespect toward religious figures or institutions.
The apology has been met with mixed reactions—while many have accepted it as a necessary step, others believe the show should have responded much earlier. So far, Bullgod himself has not retracted or apologised for his comments, leaving some viewers still unsettled.
As the conversation continues, one thing remains clear: public platforms have a duty to balance freedom of expression with respect for deeply held beliefs.
