The fourth Goeviwo festival to begin on August 2

By Emmanuel Nyatsikor

Adaklu Kodzobi (V/R), July 26, GNA – The fourth Goeviwo Festival will commence with the hiking of Adaklu Mountain at Adaklu Goefe in the Adaklu district on Saturday, August 2.

The week-long Festival, which is celebrated on a rotational basis in all Goeviwo communities, is being hosted by Adaklu Kodzobi, this year from August 2 to 10.

The Goeviwo communities are Adaklu Kodzobi, Adaklu Goefe, Goviefe, Woadze, Tsrukpe and Have.

This year’s celebration is on the theme: “Uniting for Development.”

Mr. Matthew Wormenor, Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, briefing the Ghana News Agency at Adaklu Kodzobi on Saturday, said other activities lined up for the festival included candlelight procession cleanup exercises in all Goeviwo communities, health talk and culture night, football gala, cross country, and ‘jama’ night.

The Chairman stated that the highlight of the celebration would be a fundraising durbar on 9th August and a borborbor competition in the evening.

He said the celebration would end with a thanksgiving service on 10th August.

He said President John Mahama was expected to grace the durbar as the Guest of Honour.

Mr. Wormenor mentioned other special invited guests as Togbe Afede XI, Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State and President of the Asogli Traditional Council and Togbe Gbogbi Atsa V, Fiaga and President of the Adaklu Traditional Council.

The rest he said were Mr. Governs Kwame Agbodza, Minister for Roads and Highways and Member of Parliament for Adaklu, Mr. James Gunu, Volta Regional Minister and Mr. Jerry Yao Ameko, Adaklu District Chief Executive and Dean of Volta DCEs.

Mr. Wormenor told the GNA that Goeviwo were said to be the descendants of one Togbe Goe who after the migration from Notsie in the Republic of Togo settled at separate locations in the Volta region in Ghana and parts of Togo.

He noted that despite the separation and distance between them, they were still united.

The Chairman said they used to celebrate a festival known as “Norvisi Za” but it collapsed in 1954 but they thought it wise to rekindle it and christened it Goeviwo Za.

He stated that the aim of the festival was to unite the communities and help raise funds for development, adding ” all funds raised at the festival will be given to the host community for their development.”

Mr. Wormenor appealed to all natives of the Goeviwo communities, friends and well-wishers to support the festival with their presence and donations.

He said the committee was working to bring other Goeviwo communities to their fold.
