President John Dramani Mahama
Former Ledzokuku Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mordecai Abusuayedom Quarshie, has called on members of the party to allow President John Dramani Mahama to govern for at least one year before subjecting his administration to criticism or comparison.
According to a report by starrfm.com.gh on July 23, Quarshie appealed to members of the NPP to exercise restraint and give the president space to implement his vision for the country.
He emphasised that history has shown how public perception of leadership can shift over time, citing the case of former Head of State, General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong.
“Even General Acheampong, who Ghanaians vilified so much and eventually tied him to a stake and shot him, now attracts positive reviews from some quarters. Today, you hear comments about him and you wonder if it’s the same person being talked about,” he said.
The former MCE encouraged the NPP to prioritise internal reorganisation, party unity, and a recommitment to the principles of public service.
“What is important is that the NPP unites, come together, and commit to service to humanity and not just to ourselves,” he stated.
He noted that the party is undergoing a period of reflection and preparation, and expressed confidence that when completed, the NPP would be well-positioned to present a renewed and appealing message to the Ghanaian electorate.
“We are in the process of preparing, and I believe firmly that when we finish and come back, we can present something that Ghanaians will find wholesome and attractive again,” he added.
