Opposition Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has asserted that Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu’s political advancement hinges on his effectiveness in his current role.
Afenyo-Markin delivered these remarks on July 21, 2025, at the Northern Ghana Development Conference hosted by the University for Development Studies in Tamale.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) leader referenced Iddrisu’s trajectory through ministerial positions including Trade, Employment, and Minority Leadership before his current appointment under President Mahama’s NDC administration.
Afenyo-Markin emphasized, “Your rise to the next level will materially depend on what you do in education; the ball is in your court.” He further suggested collaboration could bolster Iddrisu’s prospects.
The comments coincide with independent polling indicating Iddrisu ranks highly among potential NDC candidates for the 2028 presidential election.
When questioned about his ambitions, Iddrisu has previously stated he remains focused on his ministerial duties without confirming future plans. The Education Ministry oversees critical reforms amid Ghana’s nationwide infrastructure development push.
