Ghana Medical Relief is set to provide essential healthcare services to over 10,000 residents of Berekum through a weeklong medical outreach from Monday, July 21, to Friday, July 25, 2025.
This year’s initiative will offer general medicine, paediatrics, dental care, urology, obstetrics and gynaecology, ophthalmology, health education, and free medications.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the opening ceremony of the medical mission, Dr. Samuel Kwapong Owusu, President of Ghana Medical Relief, revealed that participants will also be registered for one year on the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to ensure continuity of care beyond the outreach period.
“GMR is unique in that regard. We at GMR, when we screen patients, they go to the pharmacies and they are given sample free prescriptions, and anyone who has chronic medical conditions gets insurance on the spot.
“We bring National Health Insurance with us. So when they leave, they have national insurance for a year. They can follow up with their doctor. They can get their prescriptions refilled,” he said.
Dr Kwapong Owusu also made an appeal for financial and logistical support to help expand the impact of future outreaches.
“We are only limited by our resources. The more resources we can get as contributions and donations from other institutions and other organisations, the more we have to purchase drugs.”
