Trade Minister inaugurates Grant Committee to bolster SME growth under Ghana Economic Transformation Project

The Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has inaugurated a new Grant Committee under the Ghana Economic Transformation Project (GETP) to help drive private sector-led economic growth through targeted support for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

At a brief ceremony held in Accra on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, the Minister lauded the World Bank for its financial backing and reaffirmed government’s commitment to strengthening Ghana’s non-resource-based sectors.

“The overarching objective of the Ghana Economic Transformation Project is to promote private investment and business growth in non-resource-based sectors of the economy,” Hon. Ofosu-Adjare stated. “The project seeks to strengthen a growth model that enables higher investment and productivity, particularly within sectors that are not dependent on natural resources.”

She noted that Ghana’s MSMEs continue to grapple with post-COVID-19 recovery challenges, stressing the importance of targeted grants to cushion and empower enterprises to become competitive and resilient.

As part of the Enterprise Growth component of the GETP, the government has introduced a range of grant programmes tailored to support diverse groups of entrepreneurs. These include:

The COVID-19 Response Grant, which provides emergency liquidity to high-growth SMEs;

The Women MSME Programme, which backs women-led businesses;

The PWD Enterprise Support Programme, for enterprises owned by or employing persons with disabilities;

And the Youth in MSME Programme, aimed at entrepreneurs aged 18 to 40.

The newly inaugurated Grant Committee will oversee the effective disbursement and management of these grants to ensure they translate into real impact for beneficiaries. The Trade Minister highlighted that although the GETP began in 2021 and is scheduled to end in November 2025, grant disbursements under the Enterprise Growth Programme—which launched in 2023—are still underway.

In his acceptance remarks, Chairman of the Committee, Mr Stephen Kwaku Bonnah, thanked President John Dramani Mahama for the opportunity to serve and assured the Minister of the committee’s commitment to delivering on its mandate.

“We are grateful for the trust reposed in us, and I want to assure you, Hon. Minister, that the Committee will work diligently to support the MSME sector and ensure that the objectives of the grant programme are fully realised,” Mr Bonnah said.

Other members of the Ghana Enterprises Agency Grant Committee include:

– Ms Margaret Ansei – CEO, Ghana Enterprises Agency

– Mr Carl A. Bugase – Data and Systems Manager

– Mr Yaw Sarpong – Chief Operating Officer & Head of Investment Banking, GEA

– Mr Yiadom-Boakye Augustine – Finance Director

– Ms Jewel Esi Kujawa – Director, Intersectoral Network Directorate, EPA

Additional nominations are expected from the Ministry of Finance, along with an appointment to the role of Committee Secretary.

The formation of the committee marks a significant step in Ghana’s efforts to empower its MSME ecosystem and stimulate inclusive economic transformation beyond the country’s traditional resource-driven sectors.
