Dr. Hugh C.A. Brown, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, has responded to internal criticism by stating he is not at the Commission to serve any political interest as reported by MyNewsGH.
His remarks follow growing tensions among some pro-NDC staff who allege bias and dissatisfaction with the direction of the Commission.
Insiders say Dr. Brown has firmly rejected claims of partisanship, emphasizing that his mandate is strictly professional.
“I’m not here to please anybody,” he is reported to have said, insisting that his appointment was based on merit rather than politics.
Dr. Brown, who holds a Ph.D. from the University of Helsinki and has over three decades of experience in forest management, was appointed Deputy CEO in 2022 by President Akufo-Addo.
His subsequent elevation to Acting CEO by President John Mahama has reportedly sparked unease within NDC ranks, with some describing the move as “strange and shocking.”
Concerns have also been raised over forest entry permits allegedly issued under his watch.
Documents reviewed by MyNewsGh indicate that mining permits bearing Dr. Brown’s signature were granted to companies such as FJ Minerals Limited and Amby Limited in March 2024, prior to his official confirmation as Acting CEO.
Environmental activists have voiced alarm over the Commission’s permit processes, citing the ongoing damage to protected reserves from illegal mining and logging.
Despite these concerns, the Commission has not issued any official response.
Dr. Brown maintains that his focus remains on protecting Ghana’s forests and ensuring sustainability within the sector, not on political allegiances.
