‘Act of historical vandalism’ – Victor Owusu’s family accuses NPP of erasing his legacy

Victor Owusu's family has accused the NPP of erasing his legacy from the party's history Victor Owusu’s family has accused the NPP of erasing his legacy from the party’s history

The family of the late Victor Owusu, former Attorney General and 1979 flagbearer of the Popular Front Party (PFP), has issued a scathing statement accusing the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of deliberately erasing his legacy from the party’s political history.

In the statement sighted by GhanaWeb, the family condemned what they described as “an act of historical vandalism” and called on party leadership to rectify the omission immediately.

“It is a matter of grave historical concern and legal impropriety that Victor Owusu’s name, image, and monumental contribution to the Danquah-Dombo-Busia political tradition have been recklessly omitted from NPP’s official documentation, visual commemorations, and institutional memory. This is not a matter of simple oversight, it is an act of historical vandalism and intellectual dishonesty that strikes at the very foundation of truth and justice in public memory,” the family stated.

They noted that Victor Owusu’s exclusion from the NPP’s narrative was not only an affront to his personal legacy but also a betrayal of the very democratic ideals the party purports to uphold.

“To exclude Victor Owusu, whose democratic leadership during the fragile post-Kotoka era held the flame of constitutionalism aloft, is to undermine the very legitimacy the current NPP leadership claims to uphold. It is a perverse act of betrayal, bordering on a gross violation of the principles of natural justice, intellectual honesty, and the doctrine of historical continuity,” it said.

The family further described the situation as “defamatory,” insisting it disrespects not just the memory of the late statesman, but also the dignity of his descendants and his hometown.

“We are compelled to state, without equivocation, that this conduct is unacceptable, defamatory to his legacy, and an affront to the dignity of his descendants, his community of Agona-Asante, and all right-thinking Ghanaians who value the sanctity of truth,” the statement noted.

They called on party elders, traditional authorities, historians, and civil society actors to speak out against what they termed a deliberate distortion and suppression of political history.

“We call upon party elders, traditional leaders, historians, and all fair-minded citizens to speak out and insist on historical integrity. This is a collective responsibility, and silence in the face of such distortion is complicity,” it said.

The family further outlined a set of demands to the NPP leadership: a public acknowledgment of Victor Owusu’s role in the party’s political ancestry, full restoration of his name and image in all official party materials, and a formal apology to the family and people of Agona-Asante.

“An immediate public rectification acknowledging Victor Owusu’s pivotal role in the political ancestry of the NPP. Full restoration of his name, image, and contribution in all historical records, commemorative platforms, official publications, and educational materials associated with the party, and a formal apology to the family and the people of Agona-Asante,” it said.
