Former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has said she is not a violent person and would never endanger lives.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen on July 16, 2025, she described herself as a peaceful person who would never endanger human lives.

“I have children and brothers. Why would I want to harm someone’s child? I won’t allow anyone to kill, and I certainly won’t do it myself,” she stated.

Her response follows a violent incident on July 11, 2025 at the St Peter’s Methodist Church polling station, one of 19 centres where the rerun was held due to contested results from the December 2024 general elections.

According to reports, chaos broke out after unknown individuals overpowered police officers stationed at the polling centre. Viral videos from the scene showed Hawa Koomson using pepper spray, which she claimed was an act of self-defence.

“I was surprised. I went there peacefully, but they attacked me. I had to defend myself,” she said.

Addressing previous allegations, Koomson also spoke about a 2020 incident in Kasoa where she was accused of firing a weapon.

She clarified that the shot was fired as a warning after she was attacked.

“In 2020, nobody was killed in my constituency. It was the NDC that attacked me, and I fired a warning shot in self-defence,” she explained.

She further denied any confrontation with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate during the 2024 campaign, insisting she avoided any direct contact.

“I never met with the NDC contender during the entire campaign period. I didn’t go near her or her events. So, I was surprised to hear that I was being blamed for causing confusion,” she indicated.

Although the rerun was marred by tension and controversy, Koomson maintains that she was unjustly blamed and insists her actions were purely defensive.

“I didn’t go there to fight. I was attacked, and I only tried to protect myself,” she emphasised.
