The Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Yandoh, recently shared hilarious cultural shocks he experienced on his visit to Accra, during the detention of Chairman Wontumi by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
Commenting on his experience in Ghana’s capital city, Accra, which was in sharp contrast to what he is used to in Kumasi, the second largest city in Ghana, Yandoh’s comments on what he termed as cultural shocks have since gone viral on social media.
In an interview on Lawson TV dated July 16, 2025, Yandoh said, “I’ve been to Accra before, but this trip was different due to the circumstances. We intended to make a return journey, so I didn’t prepare adequately. Unfortunately, because EOCO held Wontumi beyond what we anticipated, we had to stay for days. Initially, I thought I could sleep in my car right in front of the EOCO building. However, spending a night in a car isn’t easy. After two days of sleeping in my car, I found it difficult to stretch my legs and arms. The worst part was dealing with mosquitoes that disrupted my sleep.”
Yandoh touched on several cultural differences that surprised him during his short trip to Accra, including the fast-paced lifestyle in Accra, the fashion choices, and the unique ways people greet one another.
He humorously noted in a post on X by Sikaofficial on July 16, 2025, “The mosquitoes in Accra are different. They knock on your car windows to get in. As EOCO is after your life, mosquitoes are also after you. It’s a terrible experience. Even the food available in Accra is limited. If it’s not waakye, then it’s kenkey. And the kenkey doesn’t come with okro soup—it’s just served with spicy pepper. In Kumasi, kenkey typically comes with okro, making it much more enjoyable, but in Accra, I haven’t encountered that. What kind of food are the people in Accra eating? The kenkey is hot, and so is the pepper; if that enters your head, you can imagine what will happen.”
“The way people eat in Accra is quite peculiar. There are no places to go for your preferred dishes like there are in Kumasi. Living in Accra isn’t easy. I spent almost seven days there. I’ve been with Chairman Wontumi this entire time, and I’ve come to believe that when you meet a good person in your life, you should hold onto them. Wontumi is a good person,” he added.
Yandoh also chuckled as he recounted how overwhelmed he was by the “endless traffic jams” and the “fierce competition” for everything from taxis to street food.
