Defending Champions South Africa and Ghana ease to quarters

Defending champions Banyana Banyana of South Africa and Ghana’s Black Queens sailed through to the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) last 8 with comfortable wins in their last group matches played on Monday night in Morocco.

South Africa humiliated Mali 4-0, while Ghana humbled Tanzania 4-1 in the last Group C matches, which were played concurrently.

Banyana Banyana started brightly and took the lead within just five minutes through Lebohang Ramalepe before they doubled their lead in the 32nd minute when Refiloe Jane curled a sensational free kick into the top left.

Hildah Magaia added a third in the 61st minute before substitute Ronnel Donnelly rounded off the scoring in the 79th minute.

The result sees South Africa finish top of Group C, advancing confidently to the knockout stages as they continue their pursuit of continental glory.

In the other match Ghana struck first through Princella Adubea in the 12th minute, finishing from the centre of the box to give her side a deserved early lead.

Tanzania responded just before halftime; Stumai Athumani drew them level.

Ghana came out firing in the second half and regained control through a 63rd-minute penalty calmly converted by Alice Kusi before they extended their lead in the 87th minute when Evelyn Badu tapped in from close range following a set piece.

Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah put the result beyond doubt, finishing a swift counter-attack with precision to make it 4–1 in stoppage time.

9-time champion Nigeria will lock horns with impressive Zambia in the 1st quarter final on the 18th July at 7pm ,before hosts Morocco take on Mali in the 2nd match on Friday from 10pm.

Ghana will battle Algeria on Saturday 19th starting 7pm, before Banyana Banyana conclude the last 8 fixtures against Senegal at 10pm.
