Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka is the Minister of Interior
Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has described the recent violence that marred the Ablekuma North rerun as a “scar on Ghana’s democracy.”
Addressing journalists at the maiden edition of the Government Accountability Series on Monday, July 14, 2025, he expressed concern over the country’s continued inability to conduct peaceful elections, despite more than three decades of democratic governance.
“We condemn this in no uncertain terms. For me, it’s a scar on all our consciences that after practicing democracy for over three decades, we still can’t hold violence-free elections. That should worry all of us, especially those of us in politics,” he stated.
He explained that the police have already begun investigations, with officers from the Crime Scene Unit and ICT Department deployed to analyse all available footage. According to him, some suspects are already being tracked.
“The officer in question is known. We know his name, his number, where he is stationed, and he will appear before the Police Professional Standards Bureau, where he’ll be given the opportunity to be heard,” Muntaka explained.
The Interior Minister further disclosed that Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has shown keen interest in the matter and has instructed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to act swiftly.
“She called me. I told her I had already instructed the IGP, and he is here. I even forwarded the videos to him the same day and asked what was being done. I trust in the professionalism of the IGP and his team. They’re doing a good job,” he said.
Notably, chaos erupted at the Odorkor Methodist Church polling station during the parliamentary rerun.
According to eyewitness accounts, thugs overwhelmed the security personnel and physically assaulted several individuals, including former Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mavis Hawa Koomson.
She was reportedly shoved to the ground and stomped on her chest and groin before officers intervened to rescue her.
In addition to the attack on Hawa Koomson, three journalists covering the election were also assaulted during the rerun.
