Rashid Tanko-Computer, Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has denied allegations that the party deployed macho men during the parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency.
His comments come in the wake of a violent incident at the St. Peter’s Society polling station on Friday, July 11, when a group of unidentified men stormed the centre, attacking voters and election officials and forcing a temporary suspension of voting.
Among those assaulted were the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, and former Fisheries Minister, Mavis Hawa Koomson.
Citi News journalist Jude Duncan confirmed that both women were physically assaulted, prompting the deployment of additional security personnel to restore order. Voting resumed shortly afterward under tight security.
Speaking to Citi News’ Hanson Agyemang after the declaration of results, Rashid Tanko rejected the claims linking the NDC to the violence.
“What is the illegality here? NDC has not deployed any macho men anywhere; we have full confidence in the state security. We won the election on the basis of our track record,” He stated.
He emphasised that it is the responsibility of the security agencies to investigate and address the violent incidents, adding, “That falls within their domain.”
The Electoral Commission conducted the rerun in 19 polling stations to resolve a longstanding electoral dispute following the December 7, 2024, general elections. The NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn was declared winner of the contest.
This marks the first time since 1992 that the governing party has claimed the traditionally New Patriotic Party (NPP) held seat, following years of political dominance by the opposition party.
The rerun, conducted in 19 polling stations, brought finality to months of legal and electoral disputes stemming from the December 7, 2024, general election.
After Friday’s rerun, NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn polled 34, 090 votes while NPP’s Akua Afriyie polled 33, 881 votes.
