Even if we elect a flagbearer today, nobody will listen to us when we campaign- Eugene Boakye

Eugene Boakye Antwi, former Subin Member of Parliament [MP], accused the New Patriotic Party[NPP] of misdiagnosing the political challenge facing its recently following the abysmal performance in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.

He challenged the idea that what the next flagbearer of the party needs is more time to campaign and be marketed to voters, describing the notion as misleading and dangerous to party strategy.

He has rejected calls within the party to rush the election of its next presidential candidate, insisting that the NPP must first address deep internal cracks.

Eugene Boakye emphasised that even if the party elect a flagbearer today, they cannot campaign because the National Democratic Congress still has the goodwill of Ghanaians.

According to him, Ghanaians will not listen to the NPP now because the government is still young.

“Even if we elect a flagbearer today, they can’t campaign. What is there to campaign about? President Mahama has only been in power for six months. He has so much goodwill. Nobody will listen to you. So, what’s the rush? We should fix the party [NPP] first because the party is the vehicle that will give you victory,” he said.

NPP Primaries

NPP has officially announced Saturday, January 31, 2026, as the date for its presidential primary to elect a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

The announcement was made by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, following a critical meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025. The decision was subsequently endorsed by the party’s National Council.

The announcement of the presidential primary date signals the beginning of what is expected to be an intense political season for the opposition party as it charts its course towards the 2028 elections.
