President John Mahama welcomed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Ghana on July 3, 2025, marking India’s first prime ministerial visit in three decades.
The two-day tour aims to deepen bilateral ties through new agreements in trade, technology, health, and education.
In a Facebook post, Mahama highlighted the visit’s significance: “We look forward to productive engagements to advance cooperation between our nations.” Modi’s itinerary includes addressing Ghana’s Parliament and signing multiple memoranda of understanding (MoUs).
A pivotal moment will be Ghana’s conferral of the Order of the Star of Ghana—the nation’s highest award—placing Modi alongside global figures like France’s Jacques Chirac and Kenya’s William Ruto. Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa confirmed the honour, noting its reflection of “strong India-Ghana relations and potential for expanded collaboration.”
The visit signals renewed diplomatic momentum between the two democracies, with Ghana positioning itself as a strategic partner for India in West Africa.
