“She Must Be Seen to Be Fighting Fair” – IMANI Africa President on Chief Justice’s Media Engagement

President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has questioned the relevance of a press conference held by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, describing it as unnecessary and potentially damaging to the decorum of ongoing proceedings surrounding her possible removal as reported by Citinewsroom.

Cudjoe made his remarks during a discussion on Channel One TV’s “The Big Issue,” where he emphasized the importance of focusing on due legal processes rather than engaging in emotional appeals or public gestures.

He acknowledged that while the Chief Justice had the right to respond to the developments, the chosen method of communication was not ideal given the gravity of the matter.

According to him, the Chief Justice’s decision to publicly address certain personal experiences during the press conference detracted from the seriousness of the constitutional matters at hand.

“Seriously speaking, the press conference was very, very unnecessary,” he remarked.

He further criticized the Chief Justice’s references to being searched and needing the comfort of family members, stating that such concerns were secondary to the substantive legal questions being considered.

“This is not a place where you should be going to be cuddled… these are serious matters that we are discussing here,” he added.

Cudjoe urged for a more restrained and dignified approach, particularly from someone occupying such a high judicial office.

He maintained that the judiciary must remain focused on institutional integrity and uphold the principles of fairness, not only in law but also in public perception.
