“Nothing is Being Declared’ – Asiedu Nketiah Exposes Flaws in Asset Declaration System

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the country’s asset declaration system, labeling it a “charade” during a public lecture on June 26, 2025 as reported by Ghana Web.

According to Nketiah, the current framework lacks genuine transparency and accountability, failing to effectively combat corruption.

Nketiah criticised the process, where government appointees and public officials are required only to submit asset forms to the Auditor-General, who, he claims, has no legal authority to review the contents unless directed by a court order.

“We all deceive ourselves that we are declaring our assets, but what you actually do is fill a piece of paper, put it in an envelope, and deposit it with the Auditor-General,” Nketiah remarked.

He argued that this system only provides the appearance of asset declaration without any substantial checks or enforcement.

The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority’s Board Chairman further emphasised that for the asset declaration process to be effective, it must be subject to more stringent regulations and oversight.

His criticism aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s stance on public appointees, which mandates asset declarations and imposes penalties for non-compliance.

In May 2025, President Mahama took action against appointees who failed to meet the March deadline, requiring them to forfeit three months’ salary, with warnings of further consequences for persistent violations.
