The Minority in Parliament has announced plans to summon the management of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) to justify the recently announced 2.45% increase in electricity tariffs, set to take effect from July 1, 2025.
According to the Minority, the increment is unjustified given that key economic indicators—such as gas prices, the exchange rate, and inflation—have remained relatively stable.
Addressing the media on Thursday, June 26, Ranking Member on Parliament’s Energy Committee, George Kwame Aboagye, described the adjustment as unacceptable and lacking transparency.
“We urge PURC to come out and explain to Ghanaians. I am also going to inform the Committee Chairman to summon PURC to come to the committee and explain to us. We cannot accept this. You cannot just increase the electricity tariff without any explanation,” he said.
