A massive fire, caused by a gas cylinder explosion at the Accra Arts Centre, has left many people homeless.

The fire broke out on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, destroying over 50 wooden shops and homes. Thankfully, no lives were lost, but many people lost their belongings.

Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion, followed by flames and thick smoke. Although firefighters responded quickly, it took time to bring the fire under control due to the congested nature of the area.

Kwame Badu, the market chairman, said the fire started when someone was using a gas cylinder to heat water.

Many traders were seen searching through the wreckage for anything they could salvage.

Kojo Mensah, a woodcarver, said, “I lost everything. I don’t know what to do.”

Authorities are currently investigating the incident and working to provide assistance to those affected. They also reminded the public to use safer heating methods to prevent similar incidents in the future.
