“Money Alone Won’t Lead’ – Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu Sets the Standard for NPP Leadership

Former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has revealed that integrity and competence should be the primary considerations when selecting a flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), rather than an individual’s wealth as per reports from Ghana Web on Tuesday, June 24, 2025.

In an interview with 1957 News, monitored by GhanaWeb, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu highlighted that the NPP’s Constitution mandates that any aspiring flagbearer must have been a party member for at least four years and be in good standing.

He stated that this requirement shows a commitment to the party and their values.

“Governance is not about someone saying, ‘I have money to do this, I have money to do that,’” Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu pointed out.

He added that no single person can fully finance a campaign, stressing that financial contributions, while significant, should not overshadow the qualities needed to lead the nation.

The former Majority Leader argued that it’s not enough for a candidate to possess wealth competence, character, and integrity are paramount.

“You are looking at the competence of the person, the integrity, the character, and the ingenuity to lead,” he explained.

His remarks come amid statements from flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong, who pledged to raise $7 million for the party if it adopts a bottom-up approach in conducting its internal elections.
