The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Maame Efua Houadjeto, has announced plans by the Authority to secure major funding to help hotels and restaurants transition from the national electricity grid to renewable energy sources.
According to her, the move forms part of a broader initiative known as the Green Agenda, which aims to promote environmental sustainability across Ghana’s tourism value chain.
“When it comes to sustainability, it’s very important in our sector. We are promoting what we call the Green Agenda, and our primary focus is sustainability. As I speak to you, we are working to mobilise funds for our hospitality industry to gradually shift from the national grid to sustainable energy sources,” she said.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Ghana-China Business Summit 2025 on Monday, June 23, 2025, Houadjeto noted that energy costs remain a significant challenge for tourism operators, especially hotels.
She explained that reducing these energy expenses is key to making Ghana a more competitive and affordable tourist destination.
“I believe this initiative will help us reduce hotel accommodation costs. If our costs are too high, Ghana will not be seen as an attractive destination. It is, therefore, crucial that we support our hospitality industry, particularly hotels and restaurants, so we can ultimately bring down rates,” she stated.
The Green Agenda aligns with Ghana’s broader climate commitments and sustainable tourism strategy, with the goal of positioning Ghana as a leader in eco-friendly tourism in West Africa.
