Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has called on President John Dramani Mahama and his administration to offer an unqualified apology to Ghanaians for what he described as a deceptive approach to the fight against illegal mining, (galamsey).

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on June 21,2025, Mohammed accused the current government of failing to deliver on its promises to address the galamsey menace, despite making strong public declarations.

According to him, the Mahama-led administration has demonstrated double standards by publicly committing to end illegal mining while failing to implement effective measures or enforce relevant laws.

“The Mahama-led government should apologise to Ghanaians for deceiving them with promises of a committed fight against illegal mining when, in fact, the situation has worsened under their watch,” he said.

Mohammed stated that the environmental destruction caused by galamsey activities has deepened under the current government’s tenure, with water bodies and farmlands under increasing threat.

“If this government was serious, we would not be witnessing the alarming levels of pollution in our water bodies. It is clear that the political will is lacking,” he indicated.

He further urged Ghanaians to hold the administration accountable for what he described as a betrayal of public trust, insisting that the first step towards restoring credibility would be a public apology.

“The government must stop shifting blame and accept that it has failed the people in this critical area. An apology would be the first step toward rebuilding credibility,” he said
