‘It’s not about what favours him’ – Bawumia camp downplays claims of advantage in NPP primary

The Director of Communications for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia 2024 campaign,

Dennis Miracles Aboagye has rejected claims that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to hold its presidential primary on January 31, 2026, was intended to give the former Vice President an unfair advantage.

Speaking on Joy FM on June 18, 2025, Dennis Miracles Aboagye dismissed the suggestions, insisting that Dr Bawumia is prepared for the internal contest regardless of the date selected.

“Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been through this process multiple times. For him, it’s not a question of what favours or works against him,” myjoyonline.com quoted Aboagye to have said.

“What matters is that the date has been set, the rules will be laid out, and the internal debates can begin.”

He emphasised that Dr Bawumia remains focused on engaging party delegates with his message of forward-thinking leadership and is not concerned about when the primary take place.

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the NPP officially announced Saturday, January 31, 2026, as the date for the presidential primary during a key meeting held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

The decision, communicated by the party’s General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, paves the way for the selection of a new flagbearer to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.

Aboagye defended the NEC’s authority, noting that the party’s constitution grants it the power to set internal election timelines.

“As of now, I’m not aware of any decision that tilts the process in favour of one aspirant over another,” he stated.

“All aspirants, including Dr Bawumia, have an equal number of days to present their case to party delegates.”

He further argued that the focus should be on the vision and leadership qualities of the aspirants, not the date of the primary.

“The goal is not just to lead the NPP into 2028 but to provide bold leadership for Ghana as a whole.”
