‘I have dined with the devil before’

Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency, Mustapha Gbande, has revealed that he once had a relationship with the devil.

In an interview with Joy Prime on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, the outspoken politician distinguished between what he described as “Sunday school Christians” and believers who have endured real-life spiritual battles.

“Much as I am a good Christian, I am not a Sunday school Christian. There is a difference. You may be a Sunday school Christian because you have never encountered the devil. I have seen and dined with the devil before. Of course, I have done things in my life,” he said.

When the host pressed him to elaborate on what he meant by “eating with the devil,” Gbande explained that his words reflected past experiences that have deepened his appreciation for salvation.

“I just said that Sunday school Christians take Jesus Christ and God for granted. But those of us who have dined with the devil understand what it takes to receive salvation. And when you are a true Christian or Muslim, you know what that means. Christians often take God for granted.”

Gbande’s remarks appear to be a critique of what he perceives as shallow religious commitment, contrasting it with the profound gratitude and reverence felt by those who have endured spiritual and moral adversity.

His comments seem intended to highlight the seriousness of faith and the importance of not taking God’s grace lightly.
