Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin (L) and Bernard Ahiafor have clashed on several occasions.
The Chairman of the Appointments Committee of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor, and the Ranking Member of the Committee, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, clashed once again during the vetting of seven Supreme Court justice nominees.
The two lawmakers, who have engaged in a series of heated exchanges since the vetting process began on Monday, June 16, 2025, locked horns again on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, when Justice Hafisata Amaleboba appeared before the committee.
The clash ensued when Ahiafor interrupted Afenyo-Markin’s line of questioning, arguing that he was repeating a question that the nominee had already addressed.
“Honourable Minority Leader, is it not the same question that you are coming back to ask? The same question has been asked, and answers have been provided. So for me, it is the same question that you are rephrasing. So, you may answer another question, please,” Ahiafor said.
This comment infuriated Afenyo-Markin, who accused the committee chairman of deliberately attempting to frustrate his questioning.
“Chairman, if you want to find a way to stop this vetting, I will urge you; stop what you are doing. The whole country is watching you. Stop what you are doing. Stop what you are doing. If you want us to fold up, I’m not here to debate with you. I’ll fold. Discharge her. Let us go. If that’s what you want to achieve. I’ve seen it all.
“But whatever precedent, if not four years, 12 years, 20 years, it will come back and haunt this House… If you are strategically planning that a Supreme Court nominee should not go through this thing, so be it. But this question is not out of order,” the Minority Leader stated.
