Early Primaries: Sovereignty resides with delegates, not party elites

Spokesperson for Kennedy Agyapong, Kwasi Kwarteng, has dismissed criticisms suggesting that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to schedule its presidential primaries early is designed to favour a particular candidate.

In an exclusive interview on Channel One Newsroom on Wednesday, June 18, Kwarteng acknowledged that such concerns may be rooted in past incidents where some party officials, expected to remain neutral, appeared to act otherwise. However, he maintained that the ultimate decision lies with the party’s grassroots delegates.

“Opinions are like noses. They may not be entirely wrong, they also may not be entirely right especially when you look into the past and you also look at some conduct by certain individuals that ordinarily were expected to be fair, candid, neutral and take some form of adjudication position, so people may have basis for making some of these comments,” he said.

“For us, we are of the view that sovereignty resides with the people. It cannot be said that the over 200,000 delegates or polling station executives, their conscience can just be sacrificed at the altar of a few people,” Kwarteng added.

The NPP has set January 31, 2026, as the date for its presidential primaries to select a candidate for the 2028 general elections. The decision was endorsed by the party’s National Council, in line with Article 13(1)(1) of the NPP Constitution, which grants the Council the authority to fix the date and venue for the election of a presidential candidate.
