Government wants to evacuate Ghanaians in Iran as conflict with Israel escalates
The government of Ghana has begun efforts to evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran following the conflict with Israel, which has left dozens injured.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced on his social media pages on X on Monday, June 16, 2025, that the evacuation will be conducted through Iran’s land borders.
He further stated that the government’s evacuation effort will include all Ghanaians, including diplomats, students, workers, and other compatriots.
“The Mahama Administration has, in the interest of the protection of Ghanaian lives, decided to immediately evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran following an escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict.
“To guarantee the safety of our embassy staff, Ghana’s embassy in Tehran has been closed with immediate effect. The evacuation through land borders covers all Ghanaian diplomats, students, professionals, and other compatriots,” he indicated.
Ablakwa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prioritising the safety of Ghanaian nationals in Iran.
He also outlined the government’s plans for those in Israel, stating that Ghanaians living there will remain in constant communication with the Ghanaian consular departments.
“Government assures that no effort would be spared in protecting Ghanaian lives and keeping all Ghanaians out of harm’s way,” he added.
The government’s action comes amid growing tensions and escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, with both countries launching multiple attacks and missile strikes on each other.
