Over 200 homes submerged after Okrudu River overflow

More than 200 houses have been submerged at Kasoa Opeikuma in the Awutu Senya East Municipality following the overflow of the Okrudu River after heavy rains.

The floodwaters destroyed several properties and displaced hundreds of residents, leaving many stranded.

Affected residents blamed the situation on the indiscriminate construction of houses on waterways. They are calling on the municipal assembly to urgently undertake a demolition exercise to clear unauthorized structures obstructing the natural flow of water.

In an interview with , some of the victims expressed frustration, saying the persistent flooding is a result of poor planning and weak enforcement of building regulations.

Meanwhile, the Assembly Member for the Opeikuma-Kumbe Electoral Area, Adams Habibulai, described the situation as dire and called for immediate intervention to prevent further devastation.

He emphasized the need for both short- and long-term solutions to avoid future occurrences and to safeguard lives and property in the community.
