The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced that transport fares will remain unchanged following a final round of discussions with the government on Friday, June 13, 2025.

This comes as the government prepares to implement the GH¢1 fuel levy on Monday, June 16, 2025.

Speaking to GhanaWeb Business on June 13, 2025, the Industrial Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Abass Ibrahim Moro, confirmed that after a series of engagements, the leadership of the union has agreed not to adjust transport fares.

“As we said earlier, the government invited us, and today was the final meeting. Finally, we all agreed to let it go. With all the explanations given, our leadership agreed to let it go and see what happens in the near future,” he said.

According to him, the government has provided reasons for its decision to implement the GH¢1 levy on petroleum products.

He explained that the timing of the levy is aimed at helping the government fully support the energy sector towards economic recovery.

“From their explanation, they need the money for energy sector revival. That was the only source they identified where they could raise funds to keep things going,” he told GhanaWeb Business.

Commenting on the current state of transport fares, Ibrahim Moro said, “As of today, fares remain the same. We haven’t added anything. What was in place after the 16% adjustment is still what stands for now.”
