Parliament summons EC Chair over Ablekuma North election result

Parliament has summoned the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, to appear before the House next week regarding the unresolved Ablekuma North parliamentary election results.

The announcement was made by the Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, during the presentation of the Business Statement on the floor of Parliament on Friday, June 13.

According to Mr. Ayariga, Mrs. Mensa is expected to appear before a Committee of the Whole to respond to two key questions related to the electoral standoff in the constituency.

“The Electoral Commission will be asked two questions, so the EC Chair will appear before the Committee of the Whole to answer them,” he stated.

In addition, the Ministers for the Interior, and Works and Housing and Water Resources, are scheduled to brief the House on Wednesday, June 18, on the recent flooding incidents across the country and measures being taken to mitigate them.

The declaration of results in the Ablekuma North parliamentary race has been stalled due to incomplete results from three out of 281 polling stations. This has sparked fierce disputes between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), both of whom are claiming victory.

Tensions peaked on January 8, 2025, when the Returning Officer resigned following disagreements over pink sheet discrepancies. Since then, the EC has suspended the process seven times amid escalating confrontations between supporters of both parties.

Meanwhile, both the NDC candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, and the NPP’s Akua Afriyie have erected ‘thank you’ billboards, each asserting a win.
