Fuel levy postponement eases pressure on OMCs

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) says that the revised implementation date for the GHS 1 fuel levy on June 16, 2025, will give oil marketing companies (OMCs) enough time to prepare for a full rollout.

Originally, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) had scheduled the levy to take effect on June 9. However, following objections raised by the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC), which cited short notice and inadequate communication, the implementation date was revised to accommodate industry concerns.

Speaking at the 2025 Safety Week Celebration organised by COMAC, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the NPA, Edudzi Tameklo, acknowledged the Chamber’s proactive engagement, which he described as key to ensuring smooth policy execution.

“Parliament authorised this on June 3, and it has since received presidential assent. Initially, the industry was up in arms. We understand the need for revenue and have provided justifications.

“However, when the industry reached out and clearly indicated that the proposed framework would pose additional financial burdens, we saw wisdom in their concerns and quickly acted to resolve the issue,” he said.

“Thanks be to God, we were able to reach a consensus. Today, I can say to the glory of God that COMAC members can now prepare adequately and stabilise their financial operations,” he added.

The postponement is seen as a significant step in promoting collaboration between regulators and stakeholders in Ghana’s petroleum sector.
