A 14-year-old Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidate, Awudu Gariba, tragically passed away on Friday, June 13, 2025, after collapsing at the Adiembra Examination Centre in the Assin South District of the Central Region.
Awudu, a student of Nnuanua Number 1 Basic School, reportedly began exhibiting signs of illness during the previous day’s examination and was taken to the Assin Adiembra CHPs compound for medical attention.
But he was not attended to as a result of the ongoing strike action by nurses.
Consequently, the candidate collapsed while taking the first paper for today, Friday, June 13, and was rushed to the Assin Fosu Polyclinic, where he was pronounced dead.
The Assin South District Education Director, Isaac Opoku, who confirmed the news to Citi News, expressed profound shock over the untimely demise of the student.
He noted that “Arrangements are being made to inform Awudu’s parents about the tragic incident.”
Frederick Agyei, the headteacher of Nnuanua Number 1 Basic School, recounted that Awudu had shown signs of illness during the previous day’s examination.
He emphasised the school’s efforts to seek medical assistance promptly, expressing deep sorrow over the loss and urged the community and fellow students to remain calm during this difficult time.
