Ghana is set to take a major step into the electric vehicle (EV) industry following bilateral talks between Ghana and China on the sidelines of the ongoing China-Africa Summit in Changsha in China.
According to Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, both parties have agreed to work towards the establishment of an electric car manufacturing plant in Ghana.
In a post shared on his X page on Thursday, June 12, 2025, Ablakwa stated that the initiative would be anchored on Ghana’s strategic lithium deposits, positioning the country as a future hub for green automotive technology in the West African sub-region.
“In our bilateral engagement on the sidelines of the ongoing China-Africa summit in Changsha China, we further agreed to work towards establishing an electric car manufacturing plant in Ghana anchored on Ghana’s strategic lithium deposits,” Ablakwa stated.
The project aligns with President John Mahama’s industrialisation drive and it is seen as a significant step toward economic diversification, job creation, and sustainable development.
Lithium, a critical component in EV batteries, has been identified as one of Ghana’s key mineral resources, with increasing global demand driven by the transition to clean energy.
The announcements underscore Ghana’s intent to harness strategic partnerships to drive industrial growth, economic diversification, and sustainable development through diplomacy.
