Medeama SC goalkeeper Felix Kyei has shed light on the surprising inclusion of Richard Ofori in Ghana’s squad for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), revealing behind-the-scenes discussions that influenced the decision.
In an interview with Medeama FM, Kyei disclosed that Black Stars coach Chris Hughton had initially considered dropping Ofori, but ultimately retained him in the squad due to non-performance-related factors.
“Chris Hughton told me if he has to drop any goalkeeper, it should be Richard Ofori,” Kyei stated.
“But because of his leadership roles and other stuff, he had to be included in the team.”
Kyei further explained that Ofori’s selection was partly strategic, aimed at helping the former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper regain his confidence and potentially attract new club interest.
“I was told Ofori’s inclusion was to help him regain his confidence and also use the tournament as a springboard to get a new club,” Kyei added.
Despite the setback, Kye, who has in form but got sidelined, expressed maturity and understanding about the coach’s decision, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of national team call-ups.
“It was Christmas, so Hughton wished me well, and I told him I have no qualms since he is the head coach and knows what’s best for the team. It’s normal; anything can happen during national team call-ups.”
Richard Ofori’s inclusion was on topical considering dip of form at club level in the lead-up to the tournament. He, eventually, ended the tournament as arguably Ghana’s worst player.
