Blame GRNMA for delay in the implementation of conditions of service – Dr Smith-Graham

The Chief Executive Officer of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), Dr George Smith-Graham, has blamed the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) for the delay in implementing their conditions of service.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on June 12, 2025, Dr Smith-Graham said the leadership of GRNMA failed to engage in negotiations with the Commission before embarking on the industrial action.

According to him, the group had placed a court injunction on the implementation of the conditions of service they had negotiated, hence stalling the progress.

“They have not met with me for any negotiations. They must do it while working, not when they are on strike. Before God and man, the fault squarely lies with them. They went to court on their own and placed an injunction on the conditions of service they had negotiated for,” he said.

Dr Smith-Graham noted that the legal action, which he described as a result of internal misunderstandings within the GRNMA, prevented teaching hospitals from making financial budget for the new conditions of service.

“The reality is that not a single teaching hospital had a budget for the conditions of service because of the injunctions,” he stated.

He added that the situation has placed undue pressure on the government.

“If all these had gone through, the government would have had the space and peace of mind to do its work,” he said.
