So That Was His First Wife?—Akufo-Addo In Trouble As He Donates GH¢200k at Funeral His Former In-law

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo joined scores of mourners and traditional leaders in Mampong to honour the memory of the late Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, with a personal donation of GH¢200,000.

The funeral, which drew dignitaries from across Ghana, marked the final farewell to the revered traditional ruler who passed away on April 20, 2025, at the age of 86. The four-day burial rites, known traditionally as Dɔte Yie, began on Friday, June 6 and concluded on Monday, June 9.

Mr. Akufo-Addo’s presence and financial contribution were particularly notable due to his personal connection to the late Mamponghene. The former president was once married to Eleanor Nkansah-Gyamenah, a niece of the chief, making Daasebre Osei Bonsu II his former in-law. The union produced a daughter, Edwina Akufo-Addo, who tragically passed away in 1993.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu II held the revered position of Mamponghene and also served as the Krontihene of the Ashanti Kingdom. He was the occupant of the Silver Stool — the second-highest stool in Asanteman, after that of the Asantehene. Throughout his reign, he was regarded as a custodian of tradition and a key figure in the region’s leadership and development.

The Dɔte Yie funeral rites were marked by rich cultural displays, traditional processions, and the attendance of royals, politicians, clergy, and members of the public. His passing has been described as a major loss to the Ashanti Region and to the chieftaincy institution in Ghana.

Mr. Akufo-Addo’s generous donation has been widely acknowledged by traditional leaders and attendees as a gesture of deep respect and enduring ties to the Mampong royal family.

“He was more than a leader — he was family,” a family source said of the former president’s emotional tribute during the ceremony.
