Former head coach of both Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak, Charles Kwablan Akonnor, has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to take immediate steps to improve officiating standards in the Ghana Premier League.
The recently concluded 2024/25 season was marred by several controversial refereeing decisions across various match venues, raising concerns among football stakeholders.
In an interview with Citi Sports, Akonnor, who also previously managed the Black Stars, expressed disappointment over the recurring issues with match officiating. He emphasized that such poor performances by referees not only tarnish the image of the league but also hinder its development.
“Officiating remains a major challenge,” Akonnor stated. “I keep hearing these reports. I’ve seen some of the footage myself. While I can’t verify all of them, the frequency of such complaints is worrying.”
As the season wrapped up, Bibiani GoldStars were crowned champions of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League. They are set to play their coronation match against Medeama SC at DUN’s Park on Saturday, June 14.
