David Tenkorang is the General Secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association
The General Secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, David Tenkorang, has criticised the government for what he asserts is its seeming inaction in resolving the nurses’ strike over conditions of service.
Reacting to the government’s press briefing on the strike, Tenkorang stated that the solution to the current issues does not lie in press conferences, as the government is doing, adding that it would not yield the desired results.
“I’m beginning to see a certain pressure that seeks to create the enabling environment that can foster any meaningful discussion. But let me quickly state that the solution in this impasse doesn’t lie in press conferences,” he criticised while speaking on JoyNews on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.
Addressing the government’s claim and concern that fully implementing the nurses’ new conditions of service could disrupt the national budget, Tenkorang expressed a different opinion, stating that their demands are not excessive enough to negatively impact the economy, as the ministry suggests.
“I think that our key demands are not above the roof but is something that can be contained. I believe that the deputy finance minister has done the arithmetic and the calculations. He realised that our demands are not something that can throw the economy off gear,” he further said.
Stressing the association’s commitment to helping the government achieve its goals in its resetting agenda, Tenkorang assured that the association would not engage in actions that could undermine the positive gains of the economy.
“We think that this is a new government and so, we need to come together as citizens to help build the economy of Ghana. If the dividends of whatever policy that are being rolled out is anything to write home about and if it improves the fortunes of Ghana, all of us will enjoy.
“And we will not do anything to derail that forward march, the attempt by the state to reset the economy. But that notwithstanding, we need to bring it to the sharp focus of the employer,” he concluded.
